Patriarchate (See) of Antioch with the See of Antioch, the See of Alexandria and the See of Jerusalem

Saint Peter and Saint PaulFounded

Melkite Church tradition maintains that the Patriarchate (See) of Antioch was founded by The Holy, Glorious and Illustrious Prince of the Apostles Peter in 45. He is the first Patriarch (Batiryark) of Antioch.

Established

In 325 A.D. at the Council of Nicaea, the Patriarchates (Sees) of Rome, Antioch, and Alexandria were established. Antioch was both a territorial and juridical entity. The bishops of these Patriarchates (Sees) were given the title of Patriarch (Batiryark).

Three Seas

The Patriarchate of Antioch has three Sees:

  • See of Antioch, which is headquartered in Bab-Charqi-Damascus, Syria and Raboueh-Antelias, Lebanon
  • See of Alexandria, which is headquartered in Cario, Egypt
  • See of Jerusalem, which is headquartered in Jerusalem

The historic See of Patriarchate of Antioch is the See of Antioch. The See of Antioch has an unbroken line of Patriarchs / Batiryarks from the Holy, Glorious and Illustrious Prince of the Apostles Peter.
To the Patriarchate of Antioch, two Sees were added much later as a personal title. Within these two additional Sees, the original line of Patriarchs / Batiryark was broken. After the original line of Patriarchs / Batiryark was broken, these two Sees were added to the Patriarchate of Antioch.
The two Sees are the Sees of Alexandria and Jerusalem. The See of Alexandria was established in 325 at the Council of Nicaea. The See of Jerusalem established in 451 at the Council of Chalcedon.

The Patriarchate (See) of Antioch is centered in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, and Turkey. The Patriarchate of Antioch spans the world.

The two Patriarchates (Sees) with an unbroken line of Patriarchs

The two Patriarchates (Sees) with an unbroken line of Patriarchs from the Holy, Glorious and Illustrious Prince of the Apostles Peter are:

  • Patriarchate (See) of Rome established in 325 A.D. at the Council of Nicaea
  • Patriarchate (See) of Antioch established in 325 A.D. at the Council of Nicaea
